Pro Tip – Changing a Tire or Tube with a E-14 Electronic Shift Rohloff Rear Hub
This is a Tech Tip focused on show you how to be able to change a Tire or Tube on an eBike equipped with a E-14 Electronic Shift Rohloff Rear Hub Gear system.
Elevating the rear end while you do this will help. Try these options:
- A very sturdy bicycle stand that can handle the heavier weight of an eBike.
- Use a 2×4 through the rear rack between tables/high chairs/etc.
- A rope tied to hold up the rear end for support are options.
Now you can proceed to wheel removal.
- There is a quick release cable for the Rohloff, it is located just forward of the rear axle as the cable enters the frame. There are two arrows on each side of the connector in order for you to easily put it back together. It is designed to be disconnected and connected for removing the rear wheel.
- Before dropping out the wheel, prepare for the belt to be slid off. Note, the belt is pretensioned and so removing and reattaching wheel will not disturb the tension.
- Zip tie the pulley wheel near the front crank. You can zip tie it to the swing arm or crank. Reason is the Pulley is spring loaded, and when the belt looses its tension from the wheel being removed and belt slid off, the pulley will release and the spring will come off. Zip tying it somehow keeps tension on pulley.
- Loosen the Small Wheel that keeps the belt on the rear axle with an allan wrench. This allows the belt to be slid off after wheel is dropped out.
- if you like, you can also use a couple/few zip ties to hold the belt on the crank so it does not slide off up front.
- Then you can undo the quick release like on a traditional bicycle, and the wheel will drop out.
- Change your tube or tire.
- Reverse the process.
We hope this helps so you can perform this service on your own.
